Day 2
Waking up next day to where the mist is almost down to ground level. However, hope springs eternal after an excellent breakfast
and the possibility that better weather awaits us at the top of the Col d'Aubisque. We are lucky. We reach the summit, 1.700 metres, and there it is. Bright sunshine and something I have never witnessed in many years. All around us the mountain peaks, like little islands, rising above a pure white blanket of cloud. It was spectacular.
Then downhill to Arrens then crossing the lovely Val d'Azun to Argeles Gazòst and a welcoming break in this comfortable, well organised, market town with shops, good cafes and restaurants. All together with easy, and nowadays essential, parking.
Heidemarie insisted that we drive through Lourdes although we realised that the Grotto, discovered by Bernadette Soubirous nearly two hundred years ago, would be closed due to the virus pandemic. And so, it was, together in the company of around two hundred and fifty hotels! The whole town was a complete tragedy. So very sad.

Then on we go, skirting Tarbes on the busy multi roundabouts outer circle road, to Mirande and our destination near Auch.

I have stayed in many types of accommodation in Europe of the years but have never enjoyed myself as much as here at the Auberge Le Cousteau .Our hosts, Yann and Fatima Malaret. These two wonderful people welcomed us as family. The cuisine is superb and the rooms excellent.
Situated on the brow of a hill the visitor is treated to a wonderful of the surrounding Gascony countryside. So ended a successful day.
